Short answer: in 2026 a professionally built small business website typically costs GBP 2,500–10,000 from a small UK agency and USD 10,000–35,000 from a US agency, while freelancers charge roughly GBP 1,200–2,000 in the UK and USD 2,000–8,000 in the US. Online shops cost more. The price follows the number of unique page designs, the integrations and how much of the content the agency writes, not the number of pages. Budget separately for hosting and a maintenance plan.

What moves the price
- Unique designs, not page count. Ten service pages sharing one template cost far less than ten different layouts.
- Content. Writing copy, sourcing photos and translating are often a third of the work.
- Integrations. Booking systems, CRMs, payment providers, membership areas and custom forms each add build and testing time.
- Migration. Moving an old site means redirects, content transfer and SEO checks.
- Accessibility and compliance. Meeting WCAG, consent rules and, for shops in the EU, the European Accessibility Act takes deliberate work.
- Who can edit what. Setting up templates and fields so the team can edit safely costs more up front and less later.
Why cheap sites often cost more
Cost guides note that sites under about USD 1,500 are usually a template with light changes. They work until the business needs a new page type, better speed or a booking system, and then they are rebuilt. The cheapest option also tends to carry the heaviest plugins and the slowest pages, which costs enquiries every month. When comparing quotes, ask what happens when you need a new page type in a year.
How to compare quotes
- Send every agency the same brief: pages, page types, integrations, who writes the content, and your current site.
- Ask for the number of unique templates in each quote.
- Check what is included after launch: training, a warranty period, maintenance.
- Ask for two live sites they built that you can load on your phone.
- Ask who owns the site, the code and the domain when the project ends. The answer should be you.
Running costs after launch
Plan for hosting, the domain, premium plugin or builder licences, and maintenance. A well-built WordPress site on good hosting needs less maintenance than a heavy one, because fewer plugins means fewer updates and fewer things to break. We cover what a maintenance plan should include in a separate article, and what to look for in hosting in our hosting checklist.
When a bigger budget is justified
If the site sells online, takes bookings or is the main source of enquiries, speed and conversion are worth paying for. Our own measurements show that a lighter build makes a visible difference; see why WordPress sites are slow and how the main builders compare. Shops that outgrow a builder entirely can read what a headless WooCommerce build costs.

For a short-term need, possibly. Sites under about USD 1,500 are usually lightly adapted templates that need rebuilding when the business grows, and they are often slower.
